If he were alive today, he'd be a superstar. He was that good. But Greg Irons died just as his star was rising. He was only 37 years old when a speeding bus on a busy Bangkok street killed him in 1984. Irons was a psychedelic poster artist, an underground cartoonist, a book illustrator, and an emerging tattoo virtuoso who brought a new sensibility to an age-old art form.

This retrospective book spans his whole artistic career, from his earliest dance posters, to his ground breaking science fiction and horror comix, to his innovative and colorful tattoo art. Greg Irons was one of the elite among posters artists who worked for Bill Graham's Fillmore Ballroom in San Francisco during the Age of Aquarius, designing posters for Chuck Berry, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother, and Paul Butterfield. You Call This Art?! reprints his finest psychedelic posters in full-color, as well as complete comic stories from Slow Death Funnies, Legion of Charlies, Deviant Slice, Yellow Dog, Thrilling Murder, and many other underground comic books. It also includes rarely seen album cover art for Jerry Garcia, Blue Cheer, Jefferson Starship and other counterculture musicians. Irons was in the second tier of underground-comics artists. He joined the San Francisco comics scene in 1969 and barely missed becoming a regular contributor to the legendary Zap Comix. His style coalesced a bit later, after he belatedly discovered the notorious EC horror comics of the 1950s, which inspired him to apply the genre's devices to the violence in American society in such comic books as Skull and Slow Death. His magnum opus, Legion of Charlies, equated Charles Manson and Lieutenant Calley and is among the 17 stories that appear whole in this retrospective. Irons also designed psychedelic concert posters for Bill Graham's Fillmore Ballroom rock shows, and after underground comics' midseventies decline, turned to children's-book illustration and tattoo art; all three forms are amply represented here. Many of his later comics have still--resonant environmental themes. The directions his career might have taken were cut short by a Bangkok bus in 1984. Irons was 37. About the Author
Bill Bensley is an internationally renowned landscape designer based in Bangkok. Since graduating from the Harvard School of Design in 1984, he has been practicing the whole range of environmental design on a global scale, with Asia as an important base. The author’s last book argued that disasters were a problem of development, rather than a problem for development. This volume takes the argument forward both in terms of the macroeconomic effects of disaster and development policy, arguing that economy and society are not inert objects, but living organisms. Using a framework based on societal networking and the economic localization of disasters, the author shows that societal functionality (defined as the capacity of a system to survive, reproduce and develop) is unlikely to be impaired by natural disasters.

This book will be of interest to scholars and practitioners involved in disaster analysis and response policy, and will also be relevant to students of development economics.

About the Author

Shonda Kuiper was the recipient of a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation to develop materials for a second course in statistics. She has held the position of Associate Professor at Grinnell College since September 2003. The courses she teaches include Introductory Statistics, Statistical Methods, Design of Experiments, and calculus-based Probability and Statistics. Shonda received her BA in mathematics from Wartburg College, and has an MS and a PhD in statistics from Iowa State University. In addition to previously holding teaching positions at Iowa State University and Wartburg College, Shonda served four years as Consulting Statistician, and later Senior Engineer, for Hallmark Greeting Cards.

 

Jeffrey Sklar is an Associate Professor in the Statistics Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and teaches various introductory statistics courses, as well as linear regression, multivariate statistics, and survival analysis courses. Before joining the faculty at Cal Poly in September 2005, he taught classes in the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability and the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I knew there was a 99% chance that I wasn't going to like Code Name Verity going into it, but that 1% and the fact that it was a group read in two of my groups prompted me to give it a try. Well, I did like it more than I expected, but I was still mostly bored out of my mind while reading it. War is not my thing, especially real wars. There was a ton of war and pilot speak, mostly in the first half since Verity is being held prisoner and spilling secrets, mainly about airfields and plane types. I really did not care, and I'll admit, I didn't understand most of it. It wasn't until Maddie took over that I finally semi got into the story.Code Name Verity is as much a story about friendship as it is about the perils of war. Verity and Maddie are best friends, who get separated during a mission when their plane is shot down. Verity is captured, and has no idea if Maddie was able to land safely. Meanwhile, Maddie is hiding out, wondering if Verity is still alive and how they'll carry out the rest of their mission. Maddie's half of the story has much more emotion, and things are actually happening, which is why I liked it a lot better than Verity's factual accounts and occasional torture session. Something awful does happen toward the end, which probably would have made me cry if I had been able to get really invested in the story. As it was, I didn't care about Verity, and I didn't really feel her friendship with Maddie, so it had no effect. Sadly.Code Name Verity is a very smart, and twisty story. While I didn't like the first half at all, I did like how all of these little details popped up in the latter half of the story. So much more made sense, and I was quite surprised by the reveals. But that wasn't enough to make me actually like it.

A story of friendship set in WWII between a female pilot and a female spy. It's told in such a gripping way that each page pulled me along despite the backdrop and circumstance. The story is full of twists and turns, and while bad things happened in the book, I didn't feel like it was told in a gratuitous manner. Meaning, it did not linger over every gruesome detail, but managed to weave a compelling story. The torture and tough subject matter was handled very well. The gravity of the situation and all the emotions that went along with it still came across without being graphic.There was one issue that jerked me out of the narrative. I'll refrain from mentioning it because it's a major spoiler, but seems like 12 resistance fighters with guns could take out three German soldiers. In the end, despite that scene, it was such a page turner, that I couldn't bump it down to four stars.And I appreciated that Maddie and Verity were so true to life. They felt like real people.Decades ago, fiction was littered with these larger than life male protagonists who always rescued themselves and saved the damsel in distress (who were utterly useless). They didn't cry, they grunted away injuries, and were basically testosterone fueled killing machines who never needed any help. Years later, I've noticed the reverse happen. Now it's the female protagonists who have slipped into that same role. I am so sick of books with the 'tough' female protagonist who is an expert fighter (or my favorite: the most feared assassin in the world at the wise old age of 17), survivalist, saves every male character in the book, and never, ever cries. What's worse...she feels the need to say (at some point in the book) "I don't need help from a man." And proceed to point out how she just did whatever she did better than a man.Basically, these 'tough' female protagonists are cardboard cutouts of their male counterparts, minus the plumbing, and more obnoxious because the narrative tends to make a point out of inserting some 'tough female' speech, or has the protagonist punching a man to show him whose in command. It annoys me to no end.Why can't individuals have strengths and weakness and everyone help each other out (no matter the gender) without giant, Rambo-sized egos?I thought Code Name Verity did an excellent job of this. Maddie had a knack for fixing things and flying, and yet, she had real fears and insecurities, and cried after every harrowing event. She felt so real. The 'tough' female stereotype sneers at crying or any sign of soft emotion. As the daughter of a war veteran, I know first hand that those who are going through, or who have been through hell are some of the most emotional people I know. Tears and empathy are a sign of strength and courage; not weakness.

Prior to selecting this book, I swore to friends and family that I would never read another WW2 book again. This novel, however, was so different that it immediately captured me. Two women, from opposite ends of the social spectrum (and the social order was so adhered to back then), become more than just friends. They become soul mates. I read nothing sexual into their friendship, and it is difficult to described such a friendship unless you have experienced it. I consider myself one of the lucky few who have. The times they live in predetermine their meeting, and their future. So the time period is 1940's, the setting is England and France, and the war is ongoing. But this is really a story of love, and what we would do for one another. Even the most difficult thing possible. Read it to find out.

Over the course of the last few months, I've read three books set in Nazi-occupied France: "All The Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr, "The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah, and "Code Name Verity". All three of these books came highly recommended, with rave reviews. All were award-winning novels - the Doerr book even won a Pulitzer. All of them are compelling and kept me glued to the page. But by far, "Code Name Verity" is my favorite of the three.I think a large part of that is the fact that, while all three of these books contain elements of hope and tragedy, "Verity" features a balance of humor as well. The other two, I suppose, are "serious" novels. But I can appreciate characters who can sometimes - even in the worst of circumstances - laugh at themselves and the mad world around them.All in all, I can't really recommend this book too highly. It is one I will certainly read over and over again. :)
